Taking their influence from the likes of A Year To Remember and Blink 182, Swansea based punksters, Seven Stories High, could well win over serious numbers of metal fans with their own brand of hardcore pop punk brilliantly encapsulated in their recently released EP, Take The Long Road Home. Once the opening intro is done, the riff laden, double kicking first bars of opening track, CTRL hits, which definitely draws many elements from their aforementioned influences. But it’s the heart pounding drum breaks that differentiate them from the ‘run of the mill’ pop punk outfits. Its a cracking opening track. That’s No Moon keeps upbeat attitude going, and the vocals from Rhys Hyett-Ferrier have an almost Robert Smith tone to them in parts. Working For Wednesdays adopts a more guitar driven sound, but the familiar double kick presence of Dave Bevan is always there. What the chorus defuses from the tracks pace, is more than made up for with a switch from a deceptively smooth tone, back to the aggression of the hardcore punk side, with guitarist, Matt Davis, providing the backing vox which leads us perfectly into the second half of the album.

Wait For It, features the vocals of Charlotte Gilpin, lead singer with fellow Welsh band, Dream State and it’s the addition of Charlotte that helps make this track a real stand out. It really is a massive, rollercoaster of a song from the very first tones of the guitar heavy intro, through the almost haunting opening coal provided by Rhys and Charlotte. It builds into its massive more hardcore chorus, with the female vocal leading the way for Rhys to follow. It’s all then stripped back to just a guitar and Rhys’ solo, before crashing back into the closing chorus. The penultimate song, Skin Me Alive, shows the bands diversity and ability to demonstrate a far mellowed sound. Acoustic guitars, piano and vocals are all that are required here, and it’s beautifully executed. But it’s soon back to what the guys do best. Assaulting your senses with a barrage of guitars, drums and great vocals, and Fools Paradiseis a great way to bring the curtain down on a great follow up to their self titled first release. As with all forms of art, Seven Stories High draw elements from those who inspire them, Sum41, Four Year Strong, etc. But these guys are carving out a niche for only themselves to occupy. Their combined talents, although influenced by others, creates a sound that is out there on their own.

It's been a rough couple of months in camp. Not having a PC is proving to be a real pain, not being able to do a lot of stuff to its full potential, but hey ho, these things are sent to try us, lol.

Over the last couple of months, we've lost 2 bands from the ranks, with SynaptiK and Target Renegades exploring other avenues. It was a blast working with both bands, and I wish them every success in the future. On the upside, Idlehour have released their new single 'My Familiar', with the track receiving some great feedback, and regular airtime on US radio.

So, we will not let things get us down!! BritRockArmy is still the place to be for kickass unsigned rock music, and things will most definitely march on from here!

Great opportunities are few and far between for unsigned/independent bands. However, 4 BritRockArmy bands have been presented with a MASSIVE opportunity to play at one of Europes biggest rock festivals.

Organisers of Sweden Rock Festival have shortlisted, from the thousands who applied, 150 bands, who have been put forward for a public vote to win a chance to play at the festival. Target:Renegades, SynaptiK, Kill For Eden, and our Danish brothers Diretone, are amongst those 150 bands.

Voting begins tomorrow at www.swedenrock.com and runs through to January 9th 2015 when the top 25 bands will move onto the next round of voting. From there, the top 3 will go on to play the festival, plus a 'wild card' entry that will be chosen by festival organisers.
Ok, so it's April 2014, and I'm sure there's literally 10's of you out there who are wondering how things are going, lol.

Firstly, on the whole, things are going very well. I'm being kept busy by the sheer number of messages/emails that the job entails, lol. Some of you may have realised through Facebook that there have already been changes to the original roster of bands. Whilst Burnthru, Wasteland, and Idlehour have remained from the start, due to some commercial differences I parted company with Salvation and brought in the awesome Head Thirteen as replacement. More recently, Faltered decided to bring the project to an end, but already have plans for a new project that will hopefully see the light of day in the Summer of this year. Keep an eye out over the next week or so, as there will be pages appearing, dedicated to each of the bands on the current roster.

In light of this, I am currently in the process of discussing with a number of bands about working with BritRockArmy. Obvioisly I can't disclose who these bands are, but what I can say is that any of the bands would be awesome additions to the Army, but discussions are still in the early stages.

There is also another avenue that I am exploring, which involves working with non UK bands, but purely on a PR level. Again, I'm in discussion with a number of interested parties, we shall just have to see where things go.

All in all, its been a very exciting and busy first few months in the world of management, and I'm seriously looking forward to what the rock gods have planned for the rest of 2014. The BritRockArmy says "Bring it on!!!"Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17204721531413848801noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1334825009036501533.post-7031850485931937022013-12-11T19:52:00.002+00:002013-12-11T19:52:40.559+00:00Times are changing!!

2013 has been a great year for BritRockArmy. 28 gigs, over 100 bands, and some absolutely amazing nights. Massive thanks must go out to all the venues I have used, Scruffy Murphys, The Flapper, The Boars Head in Kidderminster, and above all The Roadhouse in Birmingham for giving me a shot at this crazy thing!

But progress is a strange thing, and something can very often warrant change. So for this reason, things are going to be slightly different in 2014. The live events will be scaled back, although there will be a series of Boars Head Roxk Nights and, hopefully, a Battle of The Bands. The main focus of BritRockArmy will be band management, namely taking care of gigs, radio airplay, and basically anything the bands want me to do. I was really pleased with the initial response to this, and have had to pick from a great list of bands.

Over the course of the next week, I will be adding full page details of all BritRockArmy bands with links to Facebook, music, etc. For now, here's the quick version :)

The 4 bands I will be looking after are, Birmingham hard rockers Salvation. I had the pleasure of having this guys play a gig for me and they were truly awesome. Next up we have Wiltshire based heavy hitters Burnthru. Again, I was blown away by these guys when they came up to Scruffy Murphys a couple of months ago. They really destined for great things in 2014. Brothers Dan and Conor Cahalane are the driving force behind Chester alt/rockers Faltered. They head back to the studio in early 2014, to record the follow up to Fortune Favours. Last but by no means least!! Nottingham based heavy hitters Wasteland. 4 awesome bands now.

I'm really looking forward to the future adventures, and seriously excited to be working with everyone in the future.

I will add all the info about the bands soon, dedicating a full page to each band :)

Here's to an awesome 2014!

I've had the pleasure of meeting Skeleton Kid on a couple of occasions, and I have to say, they're a genuinely great bunch of guys! September 22nd sees the release of their debut album, It's A Funeral Not a Fashion Statement, (in case you hadn't seen the image above, lol). Fans would argue it's been a long time coming, but believe me, it is well worth the wait, as this is a fantastic album!!

Coming in at 9 tracks and playing for just over half an hour, my only issue is its not long enough, lol!! We start things off with Goodbye. Now traditionally, the opening track of an album should set the stall for what to expect for the remainder, and Goodbye is no exception, it's an instant classic. With Timmy C and Frankie G sharing vocal duties, as they do throughout most of the album, the smoother tone of Timmy's voice making way for a Frankie's screaming chorus. But that's not the whole story! There's a neat little twist to the end of the track, and it finishes it off beautifully. On that note, I'll say no more, you'll just have to listen. You Army, has a more metal feel to the intro, but the punk influences crash right back in with Timmy and Frankie's vocals, and the song almost becomes a vocal fight between the two of them, but it's another cracking track. Going Nowhere Fast is another mix of metal/punk that keeps the pace frantic and the mood angry, the recent single Memories has had somewhat of a facelift for obvious reasons, as when it was recorded Skeleton Kid were a 4 piece. Since then, there have been personnel changes, and they have dropped to a 3 piece, losing the second guitarist and installing Josh D behind the drums. It will be obvious to fans the difference that these changes have made to not just the sound of SK, but to the whole dynamic. For what it's worth, the facelift/remixing to Memories, have made it an even better track :)

We Stand Tall, sees Frankie take the lead in the vocals. It has the kind of anthemic chorus, that in a local venue filled with adoring fans would have the whole place bouncing and shouting along. It also allows Frankie to show off his guitar skills with a cool little solo. Theres a brief respite in pace with Bones Beyond, but no respite in intensity, with almost another power struggle in the vocal department. Miles From Home, in my opinion, is the stand out track on the album. It has an almost Queenlike feel to the guitar work from Frankie, and there's a cracking solo in the mix too. The track is quite a departure from the normal punk/metal theme of the rest of the album. There's an awesome drums only chorus that sounds like a group of mates sat singing in a pub, it's just a great track and should seriously be considered for release as a single. Save Us Now (The End) takes us back to the punk roots, and theres a glimpse of some eighties influenced electronica in there too. Tear It Down, brings the album to a close, and is a menacing mixture mix of rock/punk/metal with a bit of deathcore screamo vocals thrown in for good measure. Again, Frankie shows off his guitar skills with another great solo.

It's A Funeral Not A Fashion Statement, is a great mix of different styles, with punk/metal/gothic/rock/glam all having a say somewhere along the line. The nine tracks are all release quality, with nothing in the way of fillers in sight. Fans are simply gonna love it, and I'm pretty certain it will also help the guys raise a whole new army of support.

The thing I love most about Pain and the music, is the fact that they've swayed me to a genre of music I'd neither listened to or really had any inclination to listen to. That being said, all 11 tracks are great, fun (if that's the way to describe songs about death, burial, horror, etc) songs, that keep a merry old pace going, with no real let up in up tempo metal horror punkiness. From the opener Dr Frankenstein, with it breakneck drums, metal guitars with some pretty decent solo's thrown in. Then there's frontman, Timmy Pain's, vocals. which considering the tempo and feel to the song have a tone that although not how you would expect a metal song to sound, make no mistake, his vocals, tone and range are nothing short of phenomenal! Throughout the album, there's a mix of metal growls, more traditional rockers voice, and then there's the, almost crooner-esque vocals evident in Dr Frankenstein, Full Moon Fever, and others. Speaking of Full Moon Fever, track 3 on the album, I have to say, that it's probably my favourite track on the album, along with True Love Never Dies. That's not to say there's inferior tracks, far from it in fact, each track is worthy of release as a single. There's even a great homage to the Stephen King film, The Shining. 'Ain't no fillers on an album that's killer!!'. Whether you're a fan of metal, punk, or rock, I dare you to listen to this album and not enjoy every second of it. Now all I need is to experience their live shows! So guys, if you read this, get over to the UK!! There's a killer line up waiting for you!

If you live in Birmingham, and haven't at least seen the name Diamond Lil on a line up, poster, etc, then it's obviously Birmingham, Alabama you live in. The West Midlands rockers are more than familiar with the local scene. And with their debut EP Misfits of Society, it's not difficult to see why.
Until recently I'd not had chance to listen to it, but by god!! I've made up for it in the few weeks I've been able to. It's 5 tracks of dirty riffs, great guitar solo's, and a vocal performance from Ellis Wilde that leaves a lot of his more experienced contemporaries in the shade.

We kick off with 'Bottom of a Glass', and a cracking little riff to get us going. Straight away, you're given an idea of the power and potential that Ellis has in is voice, with some softer vocals, but some real kickass power in the chorus. there's an awesome guitar solo half way through too, so all, it's a great start!
Track 2 has quite possibly the best song title ever, Sex Injuries, it's another cracking track, great power vocals, and more great guitars. The title track, Misfits of Society, is next, and despite the up beat nature of the track, the message it conveys is a serious one. It tells us that being different is cool, it's ok not to conform. Beautiful Nowhere is next, and it's possibly the stand out track, if there is such a thing amongst 6 amazing tracks. It's a ballad-esque track with a great smoother approach to the vocals from Ellis, but still some awesome guitar work surrounding the soft vocals. Reach is just the sort of track that, at a live show would get the crowd jumpin!! Soaring vocals, guitar solos that blow your mind, and a chorus that would get any arena pumping their fists. The EP comes to a close with Barrymore (I Want More), a great little number with a mix of soft and power vocals, pounding drums, yet more intricate guitar solos, and it's a very fitting close to what is a superb piece of work.
I was actually surprised at the quality of the EP, that's not meant in any way disrespectfully, I just didn't know what to expect, and was blown away with what I heard. It's more than worth having a listen, and you can snag yourself one from any of their gigs. They just so happen to be headlining for BritRockArmy at Scruffy Murphys on Friday October 18th!!

Fans of Lancaster based hard rockers Promethium, myself included, have had to wait nearly 2 years for a second album. Well, the wait is nearly over, as October 7th will see the release of the eagerly anticipated Origins.
After the success of their first album, Welcome to The Institution, one of my favourite independent albums, vocalist Gaz and the boys have gone back to their roots, their 'origins' if you like. The result is 10 tracks of hard hitting, smash mouth rock, with more than just a splash of metal. An album that musically sounds very different to WtTI, but still has that unmistakable Promethium sound, thanks largely to Gaz emotive vocal style. He once again manages to convey the sentiment in every song through his vocals.
The album kicks off with the cracking Won't Break Me, with a great riff and drum intro. It then breaks into frantic vocal that straight away shows the power in Gaz's voice. The driving drums and bass almost force you to nod your head in time to the song. We are also treated to a great solo from Dan, before the track is over almost as abruptly as it began.
Now if you follow the band on Twitter or Facebook, you will have seen the link to the teaser track, Gunslinger, well, this is track 2 on the album, and the relentlessness continues. Although a slower pace, the power of Gunslinger is still there in spades. The Art of Hurting and Counterfeit bring the noise in equal measure, both featuring a pounding drum and bassline, a more growling, snarling vocal from Gaz, and more great riffs and guitar work from Dan and Rossi. the next track, Rain, shows another side to Promethium, and proves that they don't always have to smack you round the face to produce kickass music. Although, to describe it as a ballad would be doing it a disservice. It's one of the stand out tracks on the album, the verses show a much smoother side to Gaz's vocals, but when the chorus kicks in, we're soon reminded that Promethium are firmly fixed in the metal bracket. The guitar work and solo again, are outstanding.
Normal service resumes with The Hunted, an out and out metal track with crashing drums, driving guitars and growling chorus. Plagued by Evil and Revolver carry on in the same vein, and Believer, with its dark religious undertones, is sure to be a crowd favourite at live events. The final track on the album is the title track, Origins. This is a complete break from the rest of the album, it's an amazing acoustic track, that you almost expect at some point to break into more metal awesomeness, but it is simply a great, sedate close to an incredible album.
What Promethium have done with Origins is nothing short of amazing. They've taken all the elements of Welcome.... and grown all of them into a giant metal monster of an album. There's simply no fillers, every one of the 10 tracks is superbly written, mixing and producing is top notch and the end result is awesome.

If you're a fan of metal, you need this album, when it's released on October 7th.
You know how it is, one album comes in, then another, then a couple of singles, then the kids are ill, lol. Well now seems like the perfect time to review the long awaited debut from Faltered.
If you've never listened to the guys before, what you have to remember is that there are only Connor and Dan recording everything. Whilst Dan takes on all the guitar duties, Conner pulls double duty as both drummer and bassist. However, the shortcomings in band members are in no way reflected in the music. What you have, is a great fuzzy mix of great guitar riffs from Dan, with some pounding drums, and some great, sometimes soulfully soft, sometimes metal screamo vocals from Connor, Please Don't Take This The Wrong Way being a great example of the smooth tones Connor has. Where the second and title track, Fortune Favours, shows aspects of the heavier side of the bands music. With the chorus being a heady mix of heavy fuzzy guitars and screamo vocals.

The boys have been criticised lately for being out of time on some recordings and vocals being out of tune, well to this I simply say, in the immortal words, so fucking what!! The vocals may not be perfect, but they're certainly not out of tune! however, this all adds to Faltered's sound. After all, who wants to hear the same manufactured crap record after record!!? I'd far rather listen to a band who have a sound of their own!!

This album has been on the cards for some time now, and as I mentioned, with the 2 Cahalane brothers being responsible for all instruments and vocals, they should be proud of the work they have produced. I for one was not disappointed!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17204721531413848801noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1334825009036501533.post-51448056217111987232013-08-31T18:48:00.001+01:002013-08-31T18:48:25.605+01:00Music Reviews - What's The PointOk, some of you may have seen the post on my personal Facebook page the other day about music reviews and the necessity to reviewers find to insult bands from a personal point of view, instead of constructively criticising the music, after all, lets face it, everyone needs some constructive criticism now and then. But when a reviewer uses their position to do nothing other than slaughter a band and where they come from, that's bullshit!
The reason I do reviews is twofold. Firstly it's my blog and I'll do what I like, lol. Just kidding, I review music because I bloody enjoy it, it's been a long time since I've done any form of writing, so to do something I enjoy about something I have a huge interest in, it's a big winner on my part. Secondly, it's to get some brilliant music out to an even wider audience. I'd like to think that I've had a little influence on encouraging people to listen music they wouldn't necessarily have listened to. I've never had any negative feedback about any of the reviews I've done, and I'd like to think that if I'd either upset or offended any of the bands I've reviewed, they'd tell me :) The purpose of reviewing is to cast my opinion on the music that is sent to me, not to bash the bands. Now some people might think it weird that, if you read my reviews, I always say how good everything is. Now, sure people could say I'm just being nice, but what would be the point in that? Why would I say something is great if it isn't? I've listened to some albums that haven't been my cup of tea, and I've said it, but that doesn't make them bad albums! Just because an album might not be to your taste, doesn't give you the right to slag it off!!

I will remain to be honest with the reviews I do. It would seem as though there are reviewers out there who don't believe in that philosophy, which is a big shame.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17204721531413848801noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1334825009036501533.post-49149483803364984882013-07-23T16:58:00.001+01:002013-07-23T16:58:42.678+01:00In Dantes Eclipse - Ashes in The Rain EP

In Dantes Eclipse, from Wolverhampton, are one of the many new Birmingham bands I've had the pleasure to work with in the last 12 months, doing BritRockArmy. Albeit the only live experience I have with them is, and I'm sure all parties would admit, one that they would rather forget due to the technical issues at the venue on the date in question. I'm more than happy to say that BritRockArmy in no way jinxed IDE and they have gone on to much better things including support slots with their heroes, The Defiled, and Fearless Vampire Killers. In fact, the continue to go from strength to strength. And on the back of their debut EP, Ashes in The Rain, it's easy to see why this is the case.

With an image and sound most bands their age wouldn't dream of entering into, Hal, Ant, Ben, Georgie, and the recently added Danny Delta on keyboards, have built up quite a following in the relatively short time they've been together. The reasons for this, partly down to the guidance of Ian Marshall from Freaky Pug PR and Records, partly down to the band still being in the early stages of a massive journey for them all, but mainly down to the undeniable talent the 5 of them have. And they have it in spades!!

With Ashes In The Rain, what you have is 4 original tracks, all of which are worthy of release as singles. Enemy kicks things off, and when Hal's vocal starts, you could so easily be listening to Marilyn Manson, Sisters of Mercy, etc. His vocal tone is awesome, making the transition from smooth deep tones to harsh rasping emotion seem effortless. Ant's lead guitar work is amazing and throughout the EP, there are some brilliant solo's. Cadaver, and Swallow follow in the same vein. My personal favourite track on the EP is the closing Gravediggers Wife. It's a great showcase for the whole bands talents and finishes of a brilliantly crafted piece of work from such a young band, work that they should all be incredibly proud of. They have a sound that far surpasses their youth, and I have a feeling they're going to be around for some time to come.

I've been hearing great things about their new sound since Danny joined the fold, and I'm looking forward to hearing the new material very soon.

The new album from US rockers Brand New Machine is released on July 23rd 2013. It's 11 tracks of great classic rock 'n' roll that transport the listener back in time. Like a combination of everything good about rock and roll music from the last 20 years, with some Dave Lee Roth and Axl Rose in their. The album is filled with awesome riffs, relentless drums, and truly killer guitar solo's, with the addition of raspy vocals, more gravely than Joe Cocker with a throat infection.

The opening track Here I Am (Party), sets the stall out perfectly with great riffs, a power vocal, and the sort of chorus that should have crowds singing along in no time. It's followed closely by new single Girls Like You, which is a real throwback to DLR, Axl, and classic rock of the late eighties/early nineties, it's also packed full of awesome riffs and some great, albeit brief, guitar solo's. Next up is the albums title track, Devil Made Me Do It, another smash mouth, relentless assault, (in the best sense of the word), on the ear drums.

The whole album is an absolute cracker! It's a real shame the guys are all the way in Dallas, Texas, or I'd be booking them in a heartbeat. Dust in The Sky takes me back to days of listening to British rockers Def Leppard, albeit at a slightly faster tempo, lol. Now I know I keep making reference to days gone by, and how like some classic bands Brand New Machine sound, but make no mistake, these guys are no rock n roll wannabe's, because although their influences maybe classics, they create a sound that is completely their own. Awesome riffs, tight solo's, and amazing vocals bring a whole new vibe to their style. Brantly Thompson brings both soulful tones, and rocky rasps to a vocal that not many singers could pull off. Michael Thomas' guitar work is at times breathtaking, whilst bassist Wiley IV and drummer Kenny Sizelove both play their parts in creating something that is pretty damn close to as good as it gets!!

Devil Made Me Do It is available tomorrow from all the usual outlets.

6 months ago, I did a Q&A with The Gifted bassist Izzy, and I commented on their music being classed as 'Marmite' music. Well, after having my already sceptical mind changed with their previous album 'Forgive Me', I decided to review the Sheffield based band's new album 'Inside Out'. I say my mind was changed, this is because, when I listened to 'Forgive Me', I mistakenly had the mindset that I wasn't going to like it, but it's the label 'industrial' that I suppose was putting me off. However, if you've not listened to The Gifted before, check out 'Forgive Me' until 'Inside Out' is released in early July.

With 'Inside Out' what you have is a meticulously crafted, brilliantly produced, piece of work. 'Why (Make Me Feel This Way) ? kicks things off, with an almost military march intro, but then breaks into a driving, synth lead, beast of an opening track. Which is the theme for the whole record. Each track is testament to the programming/production skills of Andy Clarke, who also provides the vocals, guitars, and drums for the band. Whilst he is ably supported by Gennie Dyson on the synths and as mentioned, Izzy on bass. Not each track is a head mashing thunderstorm of drums, guitars, and electronica however. The final track 'Home', is a complete breakaway, starting out with just a drumtrack, piano, and guitar. It has a kind of Ultravox feel to it. This does give way to a more fuzzed guitar, feedback supported track but steel changes the entire feel of the album. Title track 'Inside Out' is about as head mashing as the album gets, with distorted vocals, guitars, and a driving drum track.

If you mix elements of Marilyn Manson, Placebo, a bit of Sisters of Mercy, and chuck in the odd bit of early Bowie, that'll give you some idea of what to expect from these guys. But above all else, don't do what I nearly did and not listen because you don't think you'll like it. Give them a listen, because they may just surprise you!!

It's an awesome album, brilliantly engineered, well produced, and a great listen.
You never know what to expect, when you're looking for a band for a gig, and someone recommends a band that you've never heard of. Well this was the case with Brothers of Caedmon from Redditch, when they played at The Roadhouse in Birmingham for me last Tuesday. They were recommended to me by Kathryn Marsh, who herself has made a couple of appearances for me in a couple of her own great bands. So, thinkning I had nothing to lose, I got in contact with lead singer Conor, and set things up, the guys were gonna kick the night off for me, sorted!! In the meantime, I watched a couple of videos on youtube and was impressed with their sound, a smooth sounding folk/rock vibe, and looked forward to seeing them at the gig.

I was gonna originally do this as a review of their EP, but that will come another time. For now, I just had to say how bloody good these guys are!! I kid you not when I say that listening to these guys in no way prepares you for how pheomenal they are live!! I, and to be honest I think mmost of the other bands, was totally blown away by how amazing they sounded. Conor's live vocal is stunning, with a great tonal range, and despite a couple of slip ups with lyrics, (which can always be forgiven), he and the band played a fantastic set. From their original songs, including the single 'Dragon and A White Nurse' and 'This Town, to stunning covers of Coldplay's 'Fix You' and of all things David Guetta's 'Titaniium', both songs given their own unique spin by the folk rockers. Each song was greeted by cheers from a more than appreciative crowd. I really mean it when I say the version of 'Fix You' is amazing!!
The crisp sound of the banjo, and the smooth tones of the trumpet used on certain tracks is what makes Brothers sound so different, and that was what immediately strikes you. Whether the music is to your taste or not, there is no denying these guys have bundles of talent, and I cannot recommend enough that if you get a chance to see Conor, Chris, Jacob, and Steve live, then do it!! There will definately be more opportunities to catch them at BritRockArmy events in the future!!
I first downloaded this EP, sometime last year, and it's the kind of record you always go back to. I first heard Stubblemelt live last November, when they headlined my first gig at Scruffy Murphys, and they blew me away with the quality of their live package, great stage pressence, they obviously get on away from the stage, because you can just see it when they play.

Their debut EP 'The Search' has received some rave reviews, they've had plentiful airplay on BBC Introducing, and to cap it all, they've supported, the soon to defunct, JLS at Stoke City FC's Britannia Stadium. playing to 3000 fans.

'The Search' is composed of 5 awesome pop/rock tracks, all of which are deserving of single release. It's impossible to pick out a standout track, as they are all great, great songs. Having said that 'See Your Lovers' is my fave track on the EP, lol. We kick things off, with 'Evil Insane', a stormer of an opener, which draws the listener in with it's gentle harmonious start, but you then realise there's something coming, and all of a sudden you're attacked by an assault of guitars, bass, and pounding drums. The riff soon gives way to Kyle Perry's soft opening vocal, but as with the songs intro, the vocal soon builds to a powerhouse performance. 'Blood Money' is a similarly produced track, although it starts off sounding far more as though it will stay a ballad, although what you actually get is a guitar driven far heavier chorus than you expect, it's another great track though, and another great example of the bands stand out quality. Next is my personal favourite, and a real crowd pleaser at live events. The reason for it's popularity is simple, in my opinion. It's an out and anthem!! Once you listen to it, you can imagine an arena full of people singing along at the top of their lungs (I know I was last Tuesday, lol). It's just an amazing track, but you can judge for yourself from the video below.

The second half of 'The Search', has a different feel to the first 3 tracks. I don't want to say there's a 'darker' feel, because thats not the right word, but 'Lord of Gods' and 'Angry Troll' certainly have an edgier feel to them. It's probably because neither track has the slower almost ballad style elements to them, they are heavier, with more guitar riffs and solo's, and heavier drums throughout. 'Angry Troll' also has the added element of rapping, from bassist Tom Marshall. It's another string to the Stubblemelt bow, showing versatility, and a willingness to incorporate different style into their music.

'The Search' is a polished, very well produced debut from another fantastic Birmingham band and if the early indications are anything to go by, when the long awaited full album comes out, (currently pencilled in for a 2014 release), that will push them further into the public eye!! Check out new tracks 'Lifetime' on iTunes and a sampler of 'Journeyman' on Soundcloud.
Some single reviews are quite tough to do, this one however isn't!! This is Brazilian Southern Rock at it's best!! You may remember the Q&A I did with Razonator's Eddie Brandoff a few months ago? In it I mentoined a new single called 'Prayer of Road'. Well here it is.

It starts off with an awesome Southern to the core, guitar intro, with a smooth riff, bit of cow bell, and then the whole band kick in. You expect a similar vocal, but what you actually get is a raw, gritty, powerful vocal throughout. It's class! Plain and simple! The whole thing is beautifully crafted, brilliantly performed, and there's a cracking solo mid way through.

The Flex first came to my attention towards the end of last year, with their debut release, 'Our Time Is Now', a fantastic, uplifting, almost anthemic blockbuster of an indie rock track. When I first heard it I thought 'these guys are gonna be huge!!' And with the release of their debut EP 'Your Eyes'.

What 'Your Eyes' gives you, is 3 more examples of what a class act the 4 piece, from the south west, are. The opening track 'Daisy' is a fab way to start things off with a neat little bassline leading the way, interspersed with some great guitar riffs. 'Your Eyes' has a much smoother vibe to it, the are hints of The Jam/Style Council throughout, but not enough for it not to sound like something original, and bloody good!! The vocals are a great mix of smooth, but also some powerful angst at times. Final track 'City Life', has Paul Weller stamped all over it, but again, given the vocal being a much smoother, richer tone than The Modfather, it gives the track a life of it's own.
It's a fantasticaly crafted EP. Great songs, lyrics, arrangements, whcih if I'm honest, I fully expected. If you like your indie/mod rock, then this is the band for you. They have talent in spades, let's hope it's not too long before there's a long player on the horizon from them!!
There's no feeling better, than the first time you listen to a band you've been meaning to listen to for a while, and being completely blown away by what you hear.

This is the feeling I had when I had a first listen to 'Misguided' the debut EP from Birmingham hard rockers GlassBullett. I've been in contact with the bands bassist, Tom, on numerous occasions about doing a review, and getting them booked for a gig, but having the memory of a goldfish, it completely slipped my mind. That was until Tom sent me a gentle reminder last week, lol. So I downloaded 'Misguided' and I have to say, it is an absolute belter!!

What you have is a collection of 4 songs that show how talented these guys are, and effortless they make it seem. The EP kicks off with the title track 'Misguided', a heady mix of pounding drums, a kickass bassline, and some truly dirty guitar riffs, then there's 'the' solo!! I'll say no more about it, you simply have to listen to it yourself!!

Following on in the same vein, you have 'Mind Reader', a frantic rollercoaster of a track that gives Lewis Ward an even bigger playground for his superb vocals. 'Falling Down' has a slightly darker feel to the track, although the energy and power are still there in spades!! You can certainly hear influence from the likes of AC/DC, Soundgarden, and AlterBridge throughout the EP, the latter 2, non more so in final track Rise of The River, a much slower track than the previous 3, but by no means a ballad, lol. The thumping drums, riffs of epic proportions and vocal power all still present.

A truly cracking debut from the lads from Cannock, and it's safe to say, in my opinion, these guys are gonna be a massive success, certainly on the local rock/metal scene.
Simply listening to 'If Looks Could Kill' from Coventry pop punks, Boundary doesn't really do it the justice it deserves. To get the full effect, you have to see these guys live on stage. Luckily, this can be done, next Tuesday, (June 4th) at The Roadhouse in Brum. Their live presence gives their catchy riffs and cool guitar solo's a whole new dimension. That being said, 'If Looks Could Kill' is a great EP from JJ (lead vocals), and the guys.

The EP starts with the title track 'If Looks Could Kill', and it's a cracker. It's one of those annoyingly infectious tracks you can't help but bounce your head and tap your feet to. In fact, If I wasn't writing this while listening to it, I'd be bouncing around my living room, lol!! It takes influence from the likes of Blink 182 and other American punk bands, but thankfully without the american accent, (nothing wrong with the accent, but the English accent gives it that something else). JJ gives a great vocal performance, and there's some great riffs and guitars throughout. 'Redemption' starts life with a nice piano solo, but before too long it's into the crashing drums, catchy riffs, and punky vocals. There's a neat little bridge midway through with just JJ and piano which then returns back to it's punky home with a cool guitar solo from lead guitarist Nick. There's a great feel to 'Beautiful Disaster', you can't help but feel that on home turf, with a room full of fans, it woulde just be a room full of bouncing bodies throughout. Another great guitar solo mid way through, which seperates Boundary from a lot of other pop punk bands and it's a great extra string to their bow.

It's a great EP, and a very polished 2nd piece of work from a band who have been together a litle over 18 months. If you get a chance to see these guys do their thing live, take that opportunity!!
Hello!!

I love reviewing a good EP! And this offering from Welsh rockers, Defy All Reason, more than capably covers that bracket. The Wrexham boys played for BritRockArmy at the beginning of 2013, and they went down a storm!! These fab guys from Wales are the kind of band that will travel literally anywhere just to get on a stage and play to a bunch of music lovers. They draw there influences from the likes of Black Stone Cherry, Nickelback and Shinedown to name a few, and you can certainly hear these influences and more throughout their newly released debut EP. Here are my thoughts :)

The EP kicks of with the insanely catchy 'Shake It'. A great riff to start, with a fab, gritty vocal from Gav Jones. Pounding drums, great guitar, with some glimpses of great solo's, it's an awesome way to start an EP. 'Behind Those Eyes', is a complete change of pace, and mood. It's a beautifully crafted ballad, A La Bon Jovi, etc. Gav once again shows a raw, gritty quality to the vocal, but also the underlying power of his voice. The track is also home to an amazing guitar solo, and a short but great power surge towards the end, it's a great continuation, and leads brilliantly into the 3rd track, another brillaint power ballad! 'Coming Home' has hints of both the power ballads of Bon Jovi and a hint of G'NR (November Rain). Again, it's a great showcase for the tonal range, and power of Gav's voice, quite possibly the pick of the 4 tracks on the EP, with a really nice string arrangement running in the background.

The power and edge returns with the final offering, 'Blame it on The Luck and Rock N Roll'. Some dirty riffs, great solo work from the guitars, and another powerhouse vocal from Mr Jones, bring this brilliant EP to an unfortuantely to early close.

There's a couple of things I'm looking forward to, now I've had the chance to listen to 'Every second Counts'. Firstly, getting these guys back on a stage in Birmingham with BritRockArmy, and, secondly, I'm really looking forward to what the future holds for these great guys from Wrexham.
Eddie Brandoff is no stranger to this business we call music. He's been playing guitar and performing since the age of 13. In his previous musical storybook, he's played in front of 50,000 people and opened for the mighty ZZ top. He formed Razonator in 2011, and released their first single 'Broken Bones' in September of that year. After just over a year, and changes to the line up, Razonator are back with a cool new track 'Prayer of Road', which I will also be reviewing very soon. Here though, Eddie answers some questions for BritRockArmy, his fans, and the universe!!

So, this is a first for me, a video review!! I was contacted by the bands frontman, Darrell Tinsley, a couple of weeks ago and asked if I'd ever done a video review. I said no, but there's a first time for everything!!

So here we go.

Plastic Rock is the new single from Runcorn based rock 4 piece, The Sonic Revolvers. It's their first release since joining forces with BritRockArmy buddies, Freaky Pug PR and Records, and is taken from their 'Suns of Mercury' EP.

The video portrays the story of a young guy who obviously has delusions of grandeur, (surely not in this industry!). He's got it all going for him, the flash car, seems to attract the ladies, and plays guitar in a band. But everything is not as it seems. Is our protagonist all he appears to be? Is everything really going as well as it would appear? Well you're just gonna have to watch the video to find out!! (Did you honestly think I was gonna give it all away, lol!!)

The truth is, this is a great little video, for a cracking track, from one very hard working BritRockArmy band! Obviously filmed on a limited budget, it gets it's point across in both a clever and entertaining way. The extras in the gig scene towards the end were recruited via social media, which is a great way to get the fans involved! It definately tells it like it is. The world is full of people driven by their ego. People who think they automatically deserve success because they think they have a God given talent!

Sad but True!

I really like the video, and challenge you not to like it too!!

P.S watch out for the dodgy looking cleaner towards the end!

Now watch the video below!!

It's been an exciting start to 2013 for the boys from Birmingham! I've had the privelege of having Lightfire play at a few BritRockArmy events, and they're one of the nicest bunch of lads you could meet!! Sadly, I missed the launch of their debut EP, Run Aground in February, but I managed to pick up a copy when they played a few weeks later.

Run Aground, is a 3 track EP that does a great job of showcasing the bands musical style and talent, and also of showing of Scott's fantastic vocals, gritty in parts, and sheer metal-like screaming in others. Ignorance kicks things off with a great riff followed shortly in by a pounding drum track. The power and pace are relentless, and the vocals strong throughout, including a couple of extremely painful sounding screams from Scott, it's a great way to kick things off!! Next up is The Sustem, another frantic paced piece, led by thumping drums and gritty guitar work and another fine vocal. The 3rd and final offering takes it down a notch, much slower but just as powerful and emotive.

It's clear to see from this debut that Lightfire have talent in spades, and that even more evident in their live sets. With great energy added to the talent, the guys never give any less than 110%. Even with a sore throat at their last BritRockArmy gig, Scott's vocal was top drawer.

If you like your rock with that little metal edge, these are the guys for you. Download the EP from iTunes, or pick one up when you go and see these guys live. Either way, you have to do both!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17204721531413848801noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1334825009036501533.post-34578198581476398482013-04-14T18:51:00.000+01:002013-04-14T18:51:47.739+01:00Resin - Embrace The Fall - Album Review

There can be no denying the fact that the UK has some amazing unsigned/independent rock bands floating around and Resin, from Leicester, are no exception to this! They're a class act, professional in every way, when they play live, they are awesome! I had the privelege of having them play one if my events at the beginning of the year, and was left speechless by the quality of their performance. They performed a lot of material from their debut album Embrace The Fall that night and oh my god what a debut it is!!

It's 9 tracks, (including an acoustic version of Clouds), of moody, emotional, grunge based rock with some awesome guitar work, some amazing riffs and solos, and an amazing vocal performance throughout from front man James Botha. There's a real Pearl Jam/Nirvana vibe to the album, never more so than in Clouds. From the opening of first track Entropy, the listener is drawn in, it starts out as a mellow guitar intro, but as soon as the drums and vocals kick in, it is transformed into a powerful grunge fuelled monster of a track. There is not one track that isn't worthy of being released as a single, an acoustic version of Fallen features on the BritRockArmy/Freaky Pug Records collaboration 'The Uprising', Beskadig (which translates from Afrikaans to Damaged), is an awesome, powerful track, and is sung in Afrikaans throughout, but the sense of emotion is still very evident. Stand out track for me is Poison. There's just something about it! Again, it starts out similar to Entropy in so much as it begins as a much softer, mellow track, but when the chorus kicks in, it's an all out rockfest!!
